How do you get stains out of a sofa?

The short answer

Act fast and blot, do not rub. Lift any solids first, then work a little mild soap and water from the outside of the stain in, blotting with a clean cloth and repeating until it lifts. Always test a hidden spot first and check your sofa's care code.

No fabric is stain-proof. On Paliano's Hydrotex™, spills sit on the surface, so most everyday stains wipe off with mild soap and water if you catch them early. The enemy is time, not the spill.

What is the first rule with any sofa stain?

The first rule is speed, because a stain is mostly a timing problem. A spill that is still sitting on the surface is a wipe. The same spill left to dry and soak in is a project. Get to it in the first minute or two and you have won most of the battle before you have decided which cleaner to reach for.

The second rule is blot, do not rub. Rubbing pushes the spill deeper into the fabric and spreads a small mark into a large one. Instead, press a clean, dry cloth or paper towel straight down to lift as much liquid as the fabric will give up, then lift, refold to a dry part, and press again. Then work from the outside of the stain inward, which keeps the edges from spreading into a wider ring.

Before any cleaner touches the cushion, test a hidden area first, the back of the sofa or under a seat, and check the care code on your label. This is the routine that protects the fabric, and it is the same gentle method behind our full guide to cleaning a fabric sofa. The point of this article is the specific spills that send people searching at 9pm.

How do you remove coffee, tea, or red wine?

These three behave the same way: they are water-based, they spread fast, and they stain darker the longer they sit. Start by blotting up every bit of liquid you can with a dry cloth, working from the outside in. Resist the urge to pour water on straight away, blot first, because the less liquid left in the fabric, the less there is to drive deeper.

Once you have blotted, mix a little mild soap and water, dampen a clean cloth (damp, not soaked), and dab gently at the mark. Blot it back up with a dry cloth, then repeat. Coffee, tea, and wine usually lift in a few patient rounds rather than one hard scrub. Red wine is the most stubborn of the three, so expect more rounds and stop while the area is still only slightly damp so it can air dry evenly.

How do you get oil or food stains out?

Oil and greasy food are the opposite problem to a drink: they do not dissolve in water, so soaking the spot does nothing useful and can spread the grease. Start by lifting the excess. Scoop solids away with the edge of a spoon, and press a dry cloth or paper towel down to soak up surface oil without grinding it in.

Then go in with a mild detergent solution on a damp cloth, the gentlest washing-up liquid you have, since it is designed to break down grease. Dab, blot dry, and repeat in light passes rather than soaking the cushion. Greasy marks lift in stages, and over-wetting a foam cushion only means a long, uneven dry. Food at home is half the reason a sofa needs this in the first place, so it is worth getting the gentle version right.

How do you handle pet accidents and smells?

A pet accident is two jobs in one: the visible mark and the smell you cannot see. Deal with the liquid first, blot up as much as you can with a dry cloth, pressing firmly, refolding, and pressing again until little transfers. Then clean the area with a mild soap and water solution on a damp cloth, blotting it back dry as you go.

The smell is the part plain soap will not finish, because the odour comes from compounds an ordinary cleaner does not break down. For that, an enzyme cleaner made for pet messes does the work, following its own instructions, and then let the spot air out fully before anyone sits back down. If your home runs on pets, it is worth reading how fabric choice changes the cleanup in our note on pet-friendly sofa fabric. A surface where spills sit on top, rather than sink in, is doing half the work for you.

Red wineBlot up fast, then mild soap and water in patient rounds; stop while slightly dampScrubbing hard, or letting it dry before you start

InkDab gently, test a hidden spot first, and ask us before using anything strongerStrong solvents; harsh solvents are not for Hydrotex™

First-aid for everyday spills, not a guarantee. Always test a hidden area first and check your care code. On Hydrotex™, use mild soap and water and skip harsh solvents.

What if the stain will not come out?

Some stains do not fully lift, and an honest guide says so. Old marks that have dried and set, ink, dye transfer from a new pair of jeans, or anything that has been scrubbed hard already can reach a point where more cleaning at home does more harm than good. If a few patient rounds of mild soap and water have stopped making a difference, that is the signal to stop, not to scrub harder or reach for something stronger.

That is when a professional upholstery cleaner earns the call. They have methods and equipment that a home routine does not, and they can assess what is safe for the fabric. On Hydrotex™, you will rarely get this far, because spills sit on the surface and most everyday ones lift with mild soap and water when you catch them early. And if a Stella cover takes the worst of it, the Stella has removable covers you can take off and wash. When in doubt, message us before you try anything stronger, a quick check is free and harsh solvents are not.

An honest note

No fabric is stain-proof, and you should be wary of anyone who tells you otherwise. Hydrotex™ is easy-care, not magic: it buys you time because spills sit on the surface instead of soaking in, but the result still depends on you acting fast and blotting gently. Caught early, most everyday stains lift with mild soap and water. Left to dry and set, some will not, and that is true of every sofa fabric ever made.

Common questions

Does Hydrotex™ stain easily? +

It is built to be easy-care, not stain-proof, because no fabric is. The difference is that spills sit on the surface rather than soaking straight in, so most everyday marks wipe off with mild soap and water if you get to them quickly. The same spill left to dry overnight is always harder, on any fabric. Speed is what matters most. Hydrotex™ is on our Sammie, Skylar, and Stella.

Can you use vinegar or baking soda on a sofa? +

They can help with some stains and odours, and they are mild, which is why people reach for them. But mild is not the same as safe on every fabric, so test a hidden area first and check your care code before using them on the visible cushion. On Hydrotex™, mild soap and water is usually all you need, and you should avoid harsh solvents entirely. If you are unsure, send us a photo on WhatsApp first.

Why does a ring mark appear after a stain dries? +

A ring is usually a sign the spot was over-wet. When you soak one small patch, the moisture carries loosened residue outward as it dries and leaves a tide line at the edge. The fix is to clean a slightly wider area than the stain, blot rather than soak, and let it air dry evenly. Light, patient passes beat one heavy soak every time, and they are kinder to the cushion underneath.
